Tips for Proper Table Etiquette

Before The Meal

  • Make sure hands are clean.
  • Ask the host where to sit.
  • Place your napkin in your lap.
  • Keep elbows off the table.
  • Refrain from using electronics.
  • You can eat the bread / butter.
  • Summon the server by raising your hand or making eye contact.
  • Do not eat the main meal until everyone has received their meal (1/2 the table).
  • Turn glasses upside down, if not being used.

During The Meal

  • Do not talk with your mouth full.
  • Pass the condiments.
  • Once you start eating, place utensils on the plate.
  • Cut food 3 times (do not cut food all at once).
  • If using a knife, keep blade towards you.
  • Do not lean in. Lift your utensil to your mouth.
  • If anything falls from the table do not pick it up, alert the server.
  • Put napkin in your chair when excused.

After The Meal

  • Loosely fold napkin and place on the left side of your plate.
  • Place the fork and knife at: 10/4 o'clock on the plate.
  • Do not pile plates on top of each other.
  • Ask for extra utensils for next course or dessert, if necessary.
  • Ask for coffee, tea, etc. if cups are not already on the table.
  • Have good conversations, be attentive and respectful.
  • Thank the server(s) and host(s).
