A. A proper handshake is a firm grip with an up and down motion, not back and forth.

A. You can walk up to someone and extend a smile or firm handshake.  Or, if you are wearing name tags, casually approach the person, say their name and ask what they do or what brought them to the event.

Q. What is the best way to follow-up with someone?
A. The best way is via email within 3 days of meeting the person.  Use the event name on your subject line and in the message re-introduce yourself/company/services and offer to meet for coffee or lunch.

Q. How can I become a better networker?
A. Sign yourself and your company up for a SN seminar by contacting us!  Also join a Chamber of Commerce and attend meetings/events frequently.  Or shadow friends and colleagues at their professional organization meetings.  The more events you attend, the better you will become!

Q. What is the best men's suit to wear to an interview?
A. The best men's suit to wear to an interview is a wool, dark, 3 button suit, where the top button is buttoned.

Q. What is the best way to preserve/maintain dress shoes?
A. We suggest buying quality leather shoes and placing them in the shoe box/bag or shoe rack after wearing them.  Use shoe trees and polish shoes when needed.  Also use shoe horns when putting them on.  

Q. Can I wear denim to business casual events?
A. Sure, events that are appropriate for wearing denim include happy hours, restaurant gatherings or art/cultural shows preferably in the evenings.  The denim should be dark for a more classier appeal, tailored or slightly relaxed fit with minimal details/embellishments.  And pair your denim with nice pumps (for ladies) or clean loafers/lace ups (for guys).

Q. When building a professional wardrobe, what is the one must have item?
A. The one must have item for men and women when building a pro. wardrobe is a: white, 100% cotton, long sleeved dress shirt.  You can wear this item all year round, inside a suit, under a vest or sweater or by itself.  It matches almost any bottom ensemble and any hair color/skin tone complexion.  And it is very easy to accessorize!

Q. At a formal table setting, which glass is which?
A. Your glasses are located on the right side of your plate.  The water glass is usually in the front and has a round shape.  The champagne glass is slightly taller with a V-slender shape.  The red wine glass is the most obvious with a very round shape with a wide opening at the top.  The white wine glass is slightly similar to the water glass but a little larger in shape.

Q. What foods can I eat with my hands?
A. You can eat bread, fruits, cookies, hors d'oeurves and pastries with your hands.  But always keep a napkin handy.

Q. Is it ok to drink alcohol at a business event?
A. It depends on the nature of the event and who is attending the event.  If you are entertaining guests/clients offer alcohol to them first but do not order before them.  If they refuse, then do not order any alcohol for yourself.  Also keep in mind cultural norms of drinking habits for different ethnic backgrounds.

Q. Who pays at a business dinner?
A.  Typically the person/party that initiated the dinner pays.  As a guest you have the option of splitting the tab as a courtesy.  We recommend that the person/party that is hosting the dinner call the restaurant in advance to make reservations and indicate who is paying for the dinner to eliminate any confusion.
